Bahama Warmth Capelet

This is a medium size capelet which I made for a gift.
If you would like a different-looking capelet, try this one.
It is very easy to make.

Materials:

Red Heart worsted weight yarn Shocking Pink
Red Heart worsted weight yarn Spring Green
Crochet hook size H
Blunt needle, if you use it to weave in tails.
Button to fit size of loop you leave on closure frog in green or pink

Note 1- Ch 3 counts as 1 dc unless otherwise noted.

Note 2- This capelet is a size Medium. But the pattern is so easy, I am very certain that by starting the lace about two rows before the size for mediu, you might tweak it to fit a smaller size. I would suggest that if you would like to make it for another size, that you use a measuring tape and a garment the size you would like to make it. Measure it carefully, write down the inches, and as you make the top, try to reach the width of the garment you are using for your measurement, which would correspond to the back of the person you are making it for. Continue the rows and increases until you reach that size. Follow the lace pattern across each row carefully so that the design will fit your larger or smaller size. It can be done, you only have to keep track of what you are doing.

Bend the cord in half, matching both sides so that they will have the same size. Turn one of those ends around as a spiral, as you turn, secure the spiral turns in place with small stitches using the little loops on the sides of the cord, fasten off.
Stitch the other end of the cord to the top of the spiral, fasten off. Take the loop you have now formed and make a knot in the middle of it with your fingers, forming a buttonhole. Sew in place. Sew your chosen button on opposite side.
You're done!

  11. I love this capelet! I was making another when I discovered this and wanted to use the closure from yours. I need some help because I can't understand how to do it. Is there anyway to reach you for help? I am so rusty... Thanks for the wonderful pattern. I want to make it next!!!

  12. Hi Azure, thank you for your nice comment. The frog or closure is really very simple (it has more looks than difficulty.)
You first make the cord. Basic Cord- Ch 2. Row 1- 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook. Turn Row 2- Insert hook in little loop that formed on the side of the sc and pull up yarn, you and complete sc. Turn. Continue repeating row 2 for the length of the rope you want to make.
To make it simpler, make a slip knot at the end of the cord, a slip knot that will allow the button you will be using to pass comfortably through it.
The other end is coiled into a spiral and held with pins until you sew it in place. That is basically what it's all about!

  13. Please help me with the sizing on the Tri-color Capelet. I love it and thank you for sharing it. My granddaughter is in a wedding party in November and I would love for her to wear it. She is a little girl, size 5. Can you help me with sizing? Many thanks, Suefeds

  14. Hi Suefeds! Actually I don't know how to reduce the size of that capelet from an adult to a child's size! Unfortunately, I do not design with a computer software. Having said that, I asked my mom, who sews for a children's charity and said to her, How would you do it? Would you measure the little girl's neck and her shoulders and make a paper pattern like a pie circle with a hole in the middle and an opening for her neck the appropriate size and take it from there, making sure that it fits, and she said: Yes, that's how I would do it. So that is the only suggestion that I could give you. You make the paper pattern and work from that pattern (if she has a poncho, you could use that as a guide plus a sweater for armholes! Start with a chain that will comfortably fit her neck, and you would be making your additions each row in the places that correspond to shoulders, the arms and to the back, that is where a sweater will come in handy, although a poncho will work too, and you will have to constantly measure to make sure you're on track. Then simply do the edging and add the frog and button and you're set.)Hope these suggestions help you!

  15. Can you create a pattern to add a hood to this capelet? That would make it perfect for what I am looking for!

    ReplyDelete
  16. Hi Jill (Moore)! Thank you for your interest in Bahama Warmth. Unfortunately, I cannot make the capelet again with a hood, because I'm too strapped for time. But my mom sews and she made a detachable hood for something and I measured it and will give you an idea of how to crochet a hood that you can attach to the nape of the neck of this capelet to turn it into a hooded one.
Take a piece of paper (a long sheet) and measure 13" long by 9" wide. Mark the top, the bottom and across with little xs. With a ruler, join each side to make a long rectangle.
When you reach the top back of it, if you want to, you can make the edge rounder to fit better the curve of hte head, but this is not strictly necessary. Now you must cut two pieces of the same rectangle, join them at the back and across the top with tape, and you have the pattern for a hood. Adjust it as you would like it to fit. Then simply sc or dc the two pieces and sew them at the back and then attach the piece to the back of the capelet. Fasten off, weave in tails, and you're done!
