I love simple cowls that are quite versatile to use in colors that go well with almost anything you can put on. Neutral shades do that exceptionally well and this cowl is very easy to make and even easier on the wear. The faux horizontal knit pattern form by the slip stitch technique makes the cowl more flexible, yet it is still thick and cozy. Notice that you can wear it three different ways! Hope you enjoy making it!
Materials-
Red Heart worsted wight yarn Buff Fleck or any color of your choice (1 skein)
Crochet hook sizes L and J
Scissors
Blunt needle
With L crochet hook, ch 61
Work loosely!
Back and Sides of Cowl-
Row 1- Slip st in second ch from hook and in each ch across. Ch 1.
Row 2- Insert hok into the first loop of first slip stitch and slip stitch, rep across. Ch 1, turn. (You just completed a row of horizontal slip stitch knit stitch.)
Row 3- With yarn in front, insert the hook from back to front into the back loop of front loop (the one nearest to you) of first st of row, pull up loop, and work a slip stitch with that loop, rep across. (Purl stitch just made.)
This piece will shrink, DO NOT PANIC!
Row 4- Work knit stitch across row. Ch 1, turn.
Row 5- Purl across. Ch 1, turn.
Continue alternating rows 2 and 3 until your piece measures 5" W x 15" L (after naturally shrinking) (Approx. 26 rows, alternating rows 2 and 3.)
Do Not fasten off!
Center of Cowl-
We will now be working across one of the narrow ends of the cowl.
Row 1- Working with hook J, ch 1, skip first st on narrow edge of piece, and insert the hook into next st and pull up a loop, make an sc, *ch 1, skip 1 st, 1 sc in next st, rep across, make 1 sc in each of last two sts of row. Ch 1, turn. (20 sts)
Row 2- Skip first sc, ch 1, 1 sc in next ch-1 sp, rep across. (21 sts) Ch 1, turn.
Row 3- 1 sc in first ch-1 sp, ch 1, skip next ch-1 sp, 1 sc in next ch-1 sp, rep across. (21 sts) Ch 1, turn.
Rows 4 to 37- Rep rows 2 and 3. Fasten off, leaving long tail to sew with.
Thread blunt needle with tail and sew the piece into a tube. Fasten off, weave in tail.
Done!

Hi there Clotilde.
ReplyDeleteThanks for popping on to my site the other day. Man, it seems like forever since I picked up a hook and yarn.
So much has happened this year and it still hasn't stopped. On a roller coaster and can't wait for it to stop and let me off. LOL
This is lovely work. I see you received your certificate for teaching crochet. Way to go. I always meant to do that, but time doesn't seem to make a way for me at the moment.
Thanks again for stopping by, I truly appreciate it. I really need to connect with my old crochet tribe again.
So great to hear from you +Rebecca Sunshine! Enjoyed visiting your site. I know about having a full plate, I've been there, but little by little with God's help, works for me. Take care and stay in touch!
