Since this one has patriotic colors, I decided to name it Pretty American Girl, and it is warmly dedicated to all lovely ladies of crochet who will make it to wear it, to give it away to friends and loved ones and best of all, who will also remember to make one or two for a needy good cause!

Craftybegonia's Feeling Pretty Capelet

Best Blog Tips

My creative process is usually very organic. I get an idea and begin to work on it and either take notes or just sit by the laptop and type rows as I go. If it gets messy, I delete it and start over. I knew this capelet would be pretty because when I was about half way through (and I had to frog it) I saw how it draped and how stylish it would be, and became determined to make it work. By then, I had the idea of making it bi-colored and closing it with a frog. I persevered, and here is the final result!

Size- Small (13 1/2" long)
Skill- Intermediate
Materials-
Read Heart worsted weight Real Teal (2 skein2)
Red Heart worsted weight yarn Black (1 skein)
Crochet hook size H
Scissors
Blunt needle to weave ends
1 Large black button
Sewing needle
Black sewing thread
Pins
Pillow or cardboard to pin rope while forming frog closure

With Real Real and H hook ch 48.
Row 1- 1 sc in second ch from hook and in each of next 10, 1 hdc in next ch, 1 dc in each ch till end of row. (47 sts) Ch 3, turn.
Row 2- (Working on back loops ONLY) make 1 dc in each of next 35 dc, 1 hdc in next hdc, 1 sc in each sc till end of row. (47 sts) Ch 1, turn.
Row 3- (Working on back loops ONLY) make 1 sc in each of first 10 sc, 1 hdc in next hdc, 1 dc in each dc till end of row. (47 sts) Ch 3, turn.
Rows 4 to 35- (Working on back loops ONLY) Alternate rows 2 and 3. Ch 4, turn. (47 sts)
Row 36- (Working on back loops ONLY) make 1 tr in each of next 29 sts, 1 dc in each of next 2 sts, 1 hdc in next st, 1 sc in each st to end of row. (47 sts) Ch 1, turn.
Row 37- (Working on back loops ONLY) 1 sc in each of first 10 sc, 1 hdc in next hdc, 1 dc in each tr till end of row. (47 sts) Ch 4, turn.
Row 38- (Working on back loops ONLY) Rep row 36. (47 sts) Ch 1, turn.
Row 39-  (Working on back loops ONLY) Rep row 37. (47 sts) Ch 4, turn.
Row 40- Rep row 36. (47 sts) Ch 1, turn.
Rows 41 to 51- Continuing to work on Back Loops Only, and always working sc sts around the neck area, alternate 1 dc row and 1 tr row as before. Fasten off,
weave in tail.
On the opposite side of the capelet, join Real Teal.
Row 52- Working across the original foundation loops of beginning ch, ch 4, make 1 tr in each of next 33 loops, 1 dc in each of next 2 loops, 1 hdc in next loop, 1 sc in each loop till end of row. Ch 1, turn.
Row 53- (Working on back loops ONLY) Make 1 sc in each of first 10 sc, 1 hdc in next hdc, 1 dc in each tr till end of row. Ch 4, turn.
Row 54- (Working on back loops ONLY) Make 1 tr in each of first 33 dc, 1 dc in each of next 2 dc, 1 hdc in  next hdc, 1 sc in each sc till end of row. Ch 1, turn.
Rows 55 to 67- Alternate rows 53 and 54. Fasten off, weave in tail.

Edgings-
Lay the capelet flat in front of you, join Black with H hook to the top edge of neck that now lies to your right.
Row 1- Work 1 sc in each stitch down the length of the capelet. (47 sc) Ch 3 and begin to work at bottom of capelet, (you will now insert the hook in spaces in the stitches that now lie horizontally across the bottom of the capelet) 1 dc in same spot ast ch 3, ch 1, [skip 1 space, 1 dc in next space, ch 1,] rep 3 more times, 2 dc in next space, ch 1,*[skip 1 space, 1 dc in next space, ch 1,] rep 3 more times, 2 dc in next space, ch 1, rep from * across. Work 1 sc in each sc
till you reach the top of the neck. Fasten off, weave in tails.

Frog Closure-
With Black and H hook, make an crocheted I-Cord rope 19" long. Fasten off, leaving long tail to sew with.
If you don't know how to make the ropes, please refer to this tutorial: How to Make Crochet I-Cord Ropes

I call this frog closure the Pretzel Frog, and I have shown it here in another color for better visibility of what should look like when you have made it.
To make the frog, work as following:
Fold the cord in half, matching the ends.
Cross the left end over the right one, forming a loop the size of the button you will be using. Pin in place.
Curl right rope's end into a circle, insert end into the circle and pull a bit, as if you were going to make a knot, but not tightening into a knot, but leaving spaces in between, (it will look like a pretzel) bring the end up to one side of the button loop (turn the knot you just formed around, so that the pretzel part will be to the bottom and the end of the rope to the top, bring the top to the side of the loop that will form the buttonhole) and pin. Repeat on the opposite side. Now thread blunt needle with tail and sew, to secure the ends in place. Finally, take out the pins and stitch the middle, where the loop was crossed, to keep the button from slipping out. Fasten off.

Sew frog to capelet. Fasten off, weave in tail. Sew button to side opposite frog closure. Fasten off.
