Cowls have been very popular on our site. The cold months sometimes are a bit drab and it is wonderful to put on something warm and pretty and colorful to lift your spirits.That has given me inspiration for this beautiful yet simple collar which works up like a dream. You can wear it around a turtle neck or simply around your neck to keep you warm and feeling pretty on a cold and blustery day,  Enjoy!

Materials-
Red Heart worsted weight yarn Real Teal (1 skein)
Crochet hook size H
Blunt needle
Scissors

With Real Teal and H hook, ch 26

Row 1- 1 dc in 4th ch from hook and in each ch across. (24  dc) Ch 3, turn.
From now on, you will be crocheting in between the dc stitches.
Row 2- yarn over and insert hook in between the posts of the first 2 double crochet sts of the previous row and work 1 dc st as usual, rep across row. (24 dc, counting ch 3 as 1 dc) Ch 3, turn.
Row 3- Yo, insert hook right between the first two dc of previous row and work 1 dc, rep across. Ch 3, turn.
Rows 4 to 52- Rep row 2. DO NOT FASTEN OFF. Ch 4, turn (counts as first dc plus ch 1 of next row).

Lace Edge-
 (We will be working on long side of cowl across edge.)
Row 1- Skip space, *1 dc in next space, ch 1, skip space, rep from * across. (51 dc plus ch 1 spaces across.) Ch 4, turn.
Row 2- 1 dc in next dc, ch 1, *1 dc in next dc, ch 1, rep from * across, ending row with a dc in top of turning ch. Ch 4, turn.
Row 3- Rep row 3.
Fold the Lace Edge over the collar and with yarn, discreetly tack the edges in place. Fasten off, weave in tails.
Bottom of Cowl-
Join yarn to NARROW EDGE of one of the long sides of cowl.

Row 1- Working across narrow edge of Cowl, make 16 sc across narrow edge, working through both thicknesses, continue to sc across (Cowl and tacked edge of Lace Edge), make 5 more sc, for a total of 22 sc, ch 1, insert hook through both thicknesses of opposite edge of second leg of cowl and work 5 sc across the folded edge of Cowl. Now continue the row by making 1 sc in each foundation of loop of each remaining stitch. (Cowl is joined), (47 sc) Ch 2,turn.

Row 2- 1 sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn. (47 sc) 

Rows 3 to 4- Rep row 2. Ch 1, turn. (47 sc)

Row 5- 1 sc in each sc across. (47 sc)DO NOT FASTEN OFF! Ch 3, turn (counts as 1st dc of next row).

Shell Edging- 

Row 1- 1 dc in next st, ch 1, skip 1 st, [1 dc in each of next 2 sts, ch 1, skip 1 st] rep 6 times, ch 3, skip 3 sts, 2 dc, ch 3, 2 dc in next st, ch 3, skip 3 sts, [1 dc in each of next 2 sts, ch 1, skip 1 st] rep 7 times, ch 3, turn.

Row 2- 1 dc in next st, ch 1, skip 1 st, [1 dc in each of next 2 sts, ch 1, skip 1 st] rep 6 times, ch 2, skip 2 ch, 1 dc in next ch, 1 dc in each of next 2 sts, 1 dc, ch 3, 1 dc in next ch space, 1 dc in each of next 2 sts, 1 dc in next ch, ch 2, 1 dc in each of next 2 dc, ch 1,  [1 dc in each of next 2 sts, ch 1, skip 1 st] rep till end of row. Ch 3, turn.

Row 3- 1 dc in next st, ch 1, skip 1 st, [1 dc in each of next 2 sts, ch 1, skip 1 st] rep 6 times, ch 1, skip 1 ch, 1 dc in next ch, 1 dc in each of next 4 sts, 1 dc, ch 2, 1 dc in next ch sp, 1 dc in each of next 4 sts, 1 dc in next ch, ch 1, skip next ch, 1 dc in next st, ch 1, skip 1 st, [1 dc in each of next 2 sts, ch 1, skip 1 st] rep till end of row. Ch 3, turn.

Row 4- 4 dc in same spot as ch 3 (shell made), skip next 3 sts, 1 sc in next st, skip next 2 sts, 5 dc in next st, skip next 2 sts, sc in next st, skip next 2 sts, 5-dc shell in next st, skip next 2 sts, 1 sc in next st, ch 1, skip next 2 sts, 1 dc in each of next 8 sts, 1 dc, ch 2, 1 dc in next ch space, 1 dc in each of next 8 sts, ch 1, skip next 2 sts, 1 sc in next st, skip 2 sts, 5-dc shell in next st, skip 2 sts, 1 sc in next st, skip 2 sts, 5-dc shell in next st, skip 2 sts, 1 sc in next st, skip till the last st on row, work a 5-dc shell. Button-
You can add a decorative button of your choice.

Rose-
With Real Teal and H hook, ch 410.
Row 1- 1 sc in second ch from hook and in each ch across. (40 sc) Ch 3, turn (counts as first dc of first shell).
Row 2- 3 dc in first st, *4 dc in next st, rep from * across.
Roll up into flower shape. Use a yarn needle to stitch flower together on the back side.

Cowls are so comfortable and easy to wear, and this one is pretty also. It is a light one, for those days that are not too cold but you need something warm around your neck to feel just right.

Size- 25" L (in circumference) x 8'
Skill- Moderately easy

Materials-

Red Heart worsted weight yarn, Hot Red (1 skein)
Crochet hook size H
Blunt needle to sew with
Scissors

With Hot Red and H hook, ch 29 loosely.
Row 1- 1 dc in 5th ch from hook, *skip next 2 chains, (1 dc, ch 1, 1 dc) in next ch, rep from * across. Ch 3, turn. (9 ch spaces)
Row 2- (Right side): Work 2 dc in first ch 1 space, 3 dc in each chain space across. Ch 1, turn. (27 sts)
Place a marker or loop a short piece of yarn a round any stitch to mark the last row as the right side.

Row 3- Sc in first 2 dc, *ch 3, skip next 2 dc, sc in next dc, rpeat from * across the row to the last st, sc in top of turning ch. Ch 1, turn. (8 ch-3 spaces)
Row 4- Sc in first sc, ch 3, [sc in next ch-3 space, ch 3] across, skip next sc, sc in last sc. Ch 4, turn. (9 ch-3 spaces)
Row 5- Dcin first ch-3 sc space, [dc, ch 1, dc] in each ch-3 across.
Repeat rows 2 to 5 until the piece measures approximately, 26 1/2."
Edging-
Row 1- Ch 1, turn, work 26 sc across, 2 sc in last sc of row, then, working across long edge of cowl , work 86 sc across, and 2 sc at end of row, turn into narrow side of cowl and work 26 sc across,

work 86 sc across long side of cowl, ending row with 2 sc. (232 sc) DO NOT FASTEN OFF! Cut a long yarn tail and thread a blunt needle and sew across the two sc rows on narrow edge of cowl. Fasten off, weave in tail.

This is one of those easy short scarflets that you whip up in a jiffy and can throw in your bag to face an unexpected change in the weather with lots of style. It is also a great project for charity or for gift-giving. Enjoy!

Materials-
worsted weight yarn, Delft Blue, (1 skein )
Crochet hook size H
scissors
yarn needle to weave in ends

Skill- Moderately easy

Size- 38" L x 5" W

With Delft Blue and H hook, ch 71.
Row 1- 1 sc in second ch from hook and in each ch across. (70 sc) Ch 1, turn.
Row 2- slip st in first st, *hdc in next st, slip st in next st, rep from * across. (70 sts) Ch 1, turn (does not count as a stitch throughout).
Row 3- 1 hdc in each stitch across. (70 sts) Ch 1, turn.
Row 4- Rep row 2. (70 sts) Ch 1, turn.
Row 5- Rep row 3. (70 sts) Ch 1, turn.
Rows 6 to 18- Reps rows 2 and 3 alternately. (70 sts) Ch 1, turn.
Row 19- 1 sc in each stitch across. (70 sts) Ch 1.
Do not turn piece, but work on the narrow edge of scarf.
Side 1-
Row 1- Work 19 sc across narrow edge of scarf. (19 sts) Ch 2, turn (counts as first st of row)

Don't Lose Your Grip

It seems to me you can never have enough easy to wear, pretty things to put around your neck, even on breeze evenings, they just make you feel more comfortable! Ashlyn is easy and pretty and feminine. The stitches have enough "give" to make the scarflet appear as if it was knitted. The drape and the feel of these stitches is wonderful.  Enjoy!

If you are a beginner, you will need to know how to do tr stitches, and sc stitches, and how to follow instructions carefully.
Size- 5 1/2" W x 37" L

Materials-
1 Skein Red Heart worsted weight yarn, Shocking Pink
Crochet hook size H
Blunt needle to weave in tails

Back of Scarflet (Neck area):
With Shocking Pink and H hook, ch 74.
Row 1- 1 sc in second ch from hook, *ch 1, skip 1 ch, 1 sc in next ch, rep from * across.
Row 2- Ch 2, 1 sc in next ch 1 space, *ch 1, skip next sc, make 1 sc in next ch 1 sp, rep from * across.
Rows 3 to 22- Rep row 2 for pattern. Ch 1, turn.
First Side:
Row 23- Working across narrow edge of Scarflet, make 18 sc across. Ch 4, turn. (18 sts)
Row 24- 1 tr in each of next 3 sts, ch 10, skip 10 sts, 1 tr in each of last 4 sts. (Keyhole started) (18 sts) Ch 1, turn.
Row 25- 1 sc in each tr and in each ch across. (18 sts) Ch 1 turn. (Keyhole completed)
Urchin Stitch
Now we'll work on the decorative ends of our scarflet.
Row 1- Work 1 sc in each of first sts of row, skip next st, 1 sc, ch 2 1 sc in next st, *skip next st, 1 sc, ch 2, 1 sc in next st, rep from * across, till you reach the last 2 sts of row, make 1 sc in each of those last 2 sts. Ch 1, turn. (18 sts, not counting ch 2 loops)
Row 2- 1 sc in each of first 2 sts, now, working ONLY in the ch 2 loops, make 1 sc, ch 2, 1 c in first ch-2 loop, *1 sc, ch 2, 1 sc in next ch-2 loop, rep from * across, till you reach last 2 sts, 1 sc in each of last 2 sts.
Rows 3 to 24- Rep row 2 for pattern. Fasten off, weave in ends.

Second Side:
Join Shocking Pink to narrow edge of scarflet.
Row 1- Working across narrow edge of Scarflet, make 18 sc across. Ch 4, turn. (18 sts)
Row 2- 1- Work 1 sc in each of first sts of row, skip next st, 1 sc, ch 2 1 sc in next st, *skip next st, 1 sc, ch 2, 1 sc in next st, rep from * across, till you reach the last 2 sts of row, make 1 sc in each of those last 2 sts. Ch 1, turn. (18 sts, not counting ch 2 loops)
Rows 3 to 27- Rep row 2. (This side has more rows of Urchin Stitch to compensate for the keyhole on the opposite side.) (18 sts) Fasten off, weave in tails.

Back of Cowl-

With Paddy green and H hook, Ch 74.
Row 1- 1 hdc in third ch from hok and in each ch across. Ch 1 (does not count as a stitch), turn. (72 sts)
Row 2- 1 hdc in each st across. Ch 1, turn. (72 sts)
Rows 3 to 10- 1 hdc in each st across. Ch 1, turn. (72 sts)
Row 11- 1 hdc in each st across. (72 sts) Fasten off, weave in tails.

Front of Cowl-

Working on Right Side of piece, join Honeydew to narrow edge of cowl.
Row 1- With Honeydew and F hook, make 21 sc across (2 sc per each hdc of piece) Ch 1 (does not count as a stitch), turn. (22 sts)
Row 2- 1 dc in same spot as ch 1, slip st in next st, *1 dc in next st, slip st in next st, rep across from *. (22 sts) Ch 1, turn.
Row 3- 1 dc in each st across. (22 sts) Ch 1, turn.
Row 4 to 22- Rep rows 2 and 3. Ch 1, turn.
Row 23- 1 sc in each sc across. Fasten of, leaving long tail to sew with.

Thread blunt needle with tail you left and sew edge of Cowl to opposite Paddy Green narrow end. Fasten off, weave in remainder of tail.

Bible Universe

Charlee

Charlee is the third of my gray gifting cowls (for now), and I just cannot wait to share it with you. Because of the nature of the stitch I chose, it has a soft drape and it feels almost as if were knitted. Pay careful attention to the instructions because the stitch is worked using the horizontal loop that lay just behind and under the usually two loops you are accustomed to using. The whole whole stitch depends upon you using this little horizontal bar. You can make it wider, if you want it to turn and have the feel of a double knit. Enjoy!

Size- 30" L (in circumference) x 5 1/2 W
Skill- Moderately easy

Materials-
Red Heart worsted weight yarn Charcoal (1 skein)
Crochet hook size H
Scissors
Blunt needle

With Charcoal and H hook, ch 109.

Row 1- Work 1 hdc in 2rd ch from hook, and in each ch across. Ch 1 (does not count as a stitch), turn. (107 sts)
Row 2- Take a careful look at the back of your stitches. There is a small horizontal loop behind and below the usual top loops where stitches are wordinarily worked, this horizontal loop forme as you worked your first row of hdc and it now appars all along the row, at the back of the stitches. Insert your hook in the first of those loops and make 1 hdc as you normally would, rep across. ch 1, turn. (107 sts) Ch 1 (does not count as a stitch), turn.
Row 3- 1 hdc in each st across. (107 sts)
Rows 4 to 15- Repeat rows 2 and 3 alternately. Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing. Sew both ends together and weave in all ends.

I have designed and made three gray cowls for gifts and have decided to share them with you. They have the same characteristics, aside from being gray: they are relatively easy, fast, and good looking. Oh, and I have decided to name them all with a "Ch." This is the second one. Enjoy!

Materials-
Red Heart worsted weight yarn Grey Heather (1 skein)
Crochet hook size H
Scissors
Blunt needle

Skill- Moderately easy
Size- 30 1/2" L (in circumference) x 6" W

With Grey Heather, ch 108.
Row 1- 2 hdc in third ch from hook, skip 2 ch, *3 hdc in next ch, skip 2 ch, rep from * across. Ch 2, turn.

Row 2- Skip first 2 hdc, insert hook in between the second and the last hdc of the first 3-hdc group (insert the hook in between the two posts, under the horizontal threads above the posts), rep across, 1 hdc in top of turning ch. Ch 2, turn. (35 3-shell clusters plus 1 hdc and 1 ch 2 at either end.)
Rows 3 to 17- Rep row 2. Fasten off, leaving long tail to sew with.

Thread blunt needle with tail you left to sew with. Sew both ends together. Fasten off and weave in all tails.
