Plum Pudding Motif

An easy and effective granny square, that works relatively fast and will look great in your next crochet-squares project!

Materials:Red Heart worsted weight variegated yarn Plum Pudding
Crochet hook size H

Square size: 4-1/2" x 4-1/2"

With Plum Pudding and H hook, ch 5, sl st to close ring.
Rnd 1- Ch 3, 2 dc in ring, ch 3, *3 dc in ring, ch 3, rep from * 3 more times, sl st to join rnd.
Rnd 2- Sl st till you reach first ch-3 sp, ch 2, 4dc, 1 hdc in ch sp, skip next dc, 1 sc in next dc, *1 hdc, 4 dc, 1 hdc in next ch sp,
skip next dc, 1 sc in next dc, rep from * around.
Rnd 3- Ch 3, 2 dc in same spot as ch 3, ch 1, skip next 3 sts and work 1 sc in next dc, ch 1, *3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc in next sc, ch 1, skip next 4 sts,
1 sc in next stitch, ch 1, rep from *around, end rnd as follows, work 3 dc, ch 2 in same spot as beginning sts, sl st to beginning ch-3 to join rnd.

Rnd 4- Sl st in first 2 sts till you come to next ch-1 sp, ch 3, 1 dc in that space, 1 dc in next sc, 2 dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, skiptill you reach next ch-2 sp, work 5 dc in that ch sp, ch 1, *2

dc in next ch-1 sp, 1 dc in next sc, 2 dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, skip till you reach next ch-2 sp, work 5 dc in htat ch-2 sp, rep from * around.

End rnd with sl st in beginning ch-3.

Fasten off, weave in tail.

Done!

Pretty Granny Square Motif

I think that there are never too many stitches, squares or motifs for a crocheter to have at hand. You can use them for so many things!
Here's a pretty version of the age-old favorite granny I came up with while tinkering with my hook.

Materials:
Worsted weight yarn of your choice
Size H crochet hook


Ch 5. Sl st to join into a ring. Ch 1. Rnd 1- Make 12 sc in ring, sl st to join the beg sc. Rnd 2- Ch 5, 1 sc in next sc, 1 sc in each of next 2 sc (corner made), *ch 5, 1 sc in next sc, 1 sc in each of next 2 sc, rep from * around. (4 corners made).
Rnd 3- Sl st until you reach the first of the ch5- corner loops, ch 3, 3 dc, *ch 4, 4 dc in that loop, ch 2, 4 dc, ch 4, 4 dc in next ch-5 loop, ch 2, rep from * around.
Rnd 4- Sl st until you reach the first ch 4-loop, make ch 3, 2 dc, ch 3, 3 dc in that loop. *Ch 3, 1 sc in the 3rd dc of the 2nd shell of corner shells, ch 5, skip unto the 1st corner shell of next corner and sc in 4th dc of shell, ch 3, make 3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc in that ch-5 loop, rep from * around, until you reach the beginning ch-3, sl st to end row. Rnd 5- Ch 3, 1 dc in each of next 2 dc, 2 dc in ch 2, 2 dc in loop, 1 dc in each of next 3 dc, ch 4, 1 sc in 5th ch of ch-5 loop, ch 4, 1 dc in each of next 3 dc, in next loop make 2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc, 1 dc in each of next 3 dc, ch 4, 1 sc in 5th ch of ch-5 loop, ch 4, 1 dc in each of next 3 dc, 2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc in loop, 1 dc in each of next 3 dc, ch 4, 1 sc in 5th ch of ch-5 loop, repeat around, sl st in beginning ch 3.
Fasten off. Weave in tail.
Motif completed!

Easy Triangled Neck Warmer

I am making some winter goodies and have decided to share them with all of you. This neck warmer is a cinch to make and if you pick really bright colors, you can chase away the dreary blah of a grayish day!

Here's the pattern:
Materials:Worsted weight yarn of various colors (could be scraps from your stash)
"G" size crochet hook
Note 1: Weave in ends as you go for a fast finish!
Note 2: You can make the same scarf using only the front loop or the back loop if you want more drape.
Ch 95.
Row 1: 1 sc in 3rd ch from hook and in each ch across. Ch 1, turn. (94 sc)
Row 2: 1 sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn. Fasten off and weave in tail immediately for a fast finish. (94 sc)
Rows 3-6: Change color. Rep row 2. Fasten off. Weave in tail. (94 sc)
Rows 7 and 8: Change color. 1 sc in each sc across. Fasten off. Weave in tail. (94 sc)
Rows 9-11: Change color. Rep row 2. Ch 1, turn. (94 sc)
Row 12: Still working with the same color, make 1 sc in each of next 68 sc, chain 20, skip 20 sc, 1 sc in each of last 6 sc. Ch 1, turn. (94 sts)
Row 13: Still working with the same color, 1 sc in each of first 6 sc, 1 sc in each of next 20 ch, 1 sc in each sc to end of row. Ch 1, turn. (94 sc) (Slash completed to close neckwarmer around neck)
Row 14: Working with the same color, work 1 sc in each sc across. Fasten off, weave in tail. (94 sc)
Rows 15-16: Change color. 1 sc in each sc to end of row. Fasten off, weave in tail. (94 sc)
Row 17: Change color. 1 sc in each sc across. (94 sc)
Rows 18-20: Working with the same color, make 1 sc in each sc across. Fasten off. Weave in tail. (94 sc)
Rows 21-22: Change color. Work 1 sc in each sc across. Fasten off. Weave in tail. (94 sc)
Granny Triangle Edge:
Make 2.
With worsted weight yarn in one of the colors used for the neck warmer and G hook, ch 4, sl st to form ring.
Row 1: Ch 3 (counts as dc throughout pattern), 2 dc in ring, ch 2 (corner made), 3 dc in ring. Ch 3, turn.
Row 2: Make 2 dc in top of 1st dc of prev row. Ch 1, skip the other 2 dc of dc cluster of prev row and insert hook into the ch-2 sp of prev row, 3 dc in ch-2 space, ch2, 3 dc, ch 1, skip next 2 dc and make a 3-dc cluster in the last dc of prev row. Ch 3, turn.
Row 3: 2 dc in 1st dc of prev row, ch 1, skip next 2 dc of cluster, 3 dc in ch-2 sp, ch 1, skip next 3 dc, in next ch-2 sp make 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc, ch 1, skip next 3 dc,3 dc in neck ch-1 sp, ch 1, 3 dc in last dc of row.
Row 4: 2 dc in same stitch as ch-3, ch 1, skip next 2 dc, in next ch-1 sp, work 3 dc, ch 1, skip next 3 dc, in next ch-1 sp, make 3 dc, ch 1, skip next 3 dc. In next ch-2 sp, make 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc, ch 1. Skip next 3 dc, in next ch-1 sp, work 3 dc, ch 1, skip next 3 dc, in ch-1 space, make 3 dc, ch 1, skip next 2 dc, make 3 dc in last stitch of row. Fasten off. Weave in tail.

Edge of neck warmer: Make 1 row of sc of the same color you chose for the granny triangles on each end of the neck warmer. Fasten off and weave in tail. Sew each granny triangle to corresponding end of neck warmer with matching color yarn. Fasten off.
You can leave as is or you can make two tassels to keep ends pointed and avoid curl-up.

To make a simple tassel, cut a piece of cardboard a little bit larger than the length you want your tassels to be. Wind the amount of yarn you would like around the cardboard. Carefully take your bundle of yarn out of the card. Thread a tapestry needle and pass the needle through all the threads in your bundle. Then, using another length of yarn, tie the tassel tightly. Trim your tassels to be of the same size. Use the length of yarn in the tapestry needle to sew the tassel to the granny triangle point. Fasten off.
Or you can use your favorite method of tassel-making and even vary your tassels!

Granny Square Sweater Without a Pattern

If you want to make a special garment for a little one who is special and don't have a pattern, don't give up. It takes a little figuring out but you can make it! If you have granny squares lying around which you started for a project but got sidetracked and never finished enough of them for the project to be completed, you can make some cute sweaters with them. Let me tell you how. This is not a pattern, but more like guidelines which you can follow every time and not only for children's garments, but for any garment at all. When I was a teen, I wanted to make myself a crocheted dress. I had never made one before and had not pattern. Only mercerized crochet thread in a color I liked. My mom, who had been sewing for years, made me a pattern with brown paper. Took my measurements and transfered them to the general outlines of a dress in brown paper, and left me to fill in the space with the stitch of my choice and I did make the dress in a week! I later on unraveled it and made a cardigan with the same thread and wore it. And I also made it without a pattern. I love to work out of a pattern, but let's face it, we don't always have one for the garment we want to make, so, make one yourself! Here are the ways you can make the garment without a pattern. Method 1. If you sew or know how to make your own schematic, take the measurements of the child you want to make the garment for, transfer them to your drawing and then, enlarge them into a brown paper life size pattern and follow that. Method 2. You can take a sweater which belongs to the child, which fits him or her well and place it on top or a large sheet of brown paper and trace the shape. Then add the measurements you need to follow. Method 3. If you do not have a garment that belongs to the person you are making the sweater for, and do not have ready access to them to take measurements, or would like it to be a surprise to them, you can purchase a sewing pattern for a top for a child of the age and size of the one who will receive your gift, cut out the pattern, and trace the pieces in brown paper. Then use the brown paper pattern to make the sweater. Method 4. If you are going to make the garment in motifs, you can go to sewing chart sites online and copy the measurement for the size you are making it for. If it is a woman, size medium, for example, you can jot down the measurments, then, draw an outline in brown paper for the measurements you have copied and make the motifs to fill in the outline, pinning them to the brown paper and joining them with Irish Crochet filler stitches or just by sewing them together, much in a freeform style. There are many variations of these methods. Let's say you already have your pattern in brown paper lying on top of a clean table. Okay, decide how you will be using your granny squares, and using pins, attach them to the brown paper. Then, using dc, sc or hdc, crochet to fill in the space that is leftover. Follow the shape of the pattern for the sleeves, and join everything into a garment! That is all you need. You can do the same with skirts, jumpers, dresses, tops, cardigans, you name it. I will not tell you that this style of crocheting will take patterns out of your life, remember, I do love a good pattern myself, but it will free you like you wouldn't believe to be creative on your own and to MAKE your own patterns. I made a sweater similar to the one I am showing here, with a circular granny square in the middle of the back and it turned out gorgeous,and I gave it to Warming Families. You will be surprised at what you can accomplish. try it! It is safer than working out of your head, because you will be following the general guidelines of a design. If you have access to a garment, I have used that too, and it is nice. But you can improvise and use these tips the way that is more practical for you.
