This is a real shortie, for those days when all you want is a whisper or warmth around your neck or to put something around a turtleneck. It wears mostly like a collar, works up pretty fast too and is easy to make!
Length of Scarfie: 29" long x 4" wide
Materials-
Red Heart worsted weight yarn Coffee (about 1/2 a skein)
Red Heart worsted weight yarn Gold (about 1/2 skein)
Red heart worsted weight yarn Carrot (about 1/2 skein)
Red Heart worsted weight yarn Bright Yellow (scraps)
Red Heart worsted weight variegated yarn Marrakesh (1 skein)
Crochet hook size H
Scissors
Blunt needle to weave in tails
Measuring tape
1 Button to match color of Frog closure or contrasting it (could be a wooden button) and size large enough to fit comfortably through loop
Sewing thread to match button color
Sewing needle
With Coffee, ch 55.
Row 1- 1 hdc in 3rd ch from hk and in each ch across. Ch 2, turn. (54 hdc)
Row 2- 1 hdc in each hdc across. Ch 2, turn. (54 hdc)
Row 3 to 5- 1 hdc in each hdc across. Ch 2, turn. (54 hdc)
Row 6- 1 hdc in each hdc across. Fasten off Coffee. Weave in tail.
Row 7- Join Gold- Make 1 hdc in each hdc across. Ch 2, turn. (54 hdc)
Rows 8 to 10- 1 hdc in each hdc across. Ch 2, turn. (54 hdc)
Row 11- 1 hdc in each hdc across. Fasten off Gold, weave in tail.(54 hdc)
Base of Edging-
Working on narrow end of scarflet:
Row 12- Join Carrot, and make 16 sc across narrow edge. Ch 4, turn. (16 sc)
Rows 13 to 14- 1 sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn.
Row 15- 1 sc in each of 1st 6 sc, ch 3, skip 3 sc, 1 sc in each of last 7 sc (buttonhole made.) Ch 1, turn.
Row 16- 1 sc in each sc and in each ch across. (16 sc) Ch 1, turn.
Row 17- 1 c in each sc and in each ch across. (16 sc) Fasten off Carrot, weave in tail.
Repeat Base of Edging on opposite side of scarfie.
Lace Ends-
Join Marrakesh to one of the narrow ends of scarfie and begin to work lace as follows:
Row 18- Ch 3 (counts as first dc), 1 dc in each of next 3 sc, ch 1, skip 1 sc, 1 sc in next sc, ch 4, skip 3 sc, 1 sc in next sc, ch 1, skip 1 sc, 1 dc in each of last 4 sc. Ch 3, turn.
Row 19- 1 dc in each of next 3 dc, ch 3, 1 dc in ch-4 space, ch 3, 1 dc in each of last 4 dc. Ch 3, turn.
Row 20- 1 dc in each of next 3 dc, ch 6, 1 dc in each of last 4 dc, ch 3, turn.
Row 21- 1 dc in each of next 3 dc, ch 1, skip 2 ch, 2 dc in next ch, ch 1, 2 dc in next ch, skip 2 ch, ch 1, 1 dc in each of last 4 dc.
Row 22- 1 dc in each of next 3 dc, ch 6, 1 dc in each of last 4 dc, ch 3, turn.
Row 23- 1 dc in each of next 3 dc, ch 3, 1 dc in ch-6 space, ch 3, 1 dc in each of last 4 dc. Ch 3, turn.
Row 24- 1 dc in each of next 3 dc, ch 6, 1 dc in each of last 4 dc, ch 3, turn.
Row 25- 1 dc in each of next 3 dc, ch 1, skip 2 ch, 2 dc in next ch, ch 1, 2 dc in next ch, skip 2 ch, ch 1, 1 dc in each of last 4 dc. Ch 3, turn.
Row 26- 3 dc in same spot as ch 3, skip 2 dc, 1 sc in next dc, ch 1, 1 dc, ch 1, 1 dc, ch 1, 1 dc, ch 1, 1 dc, in ch-1 space of center 4-dc shell, ch 1, skip next 2 dc and ch sp, 1 sc in next dc, 4 dc in top of turning chain.
Fasten off and weave in tail. Repeat on opposite narrow edge of scarfie. Fasten off and weave in tail.
Snail Frog Closure-
With Bright Yellow and H hook, le
aving a long tail at the start, ch 2.Row 1- 1 sc in second ch from hook. Turn. (NO ch 1)
Row 2- Take a close look at the side of your stitches, there is a tiny loop on the side, insert hook into that loop and pull up yarn
through it, now you have two loops on hook, yo, and pull yarn through all loops on hook. Turn. (NO ch 1)
Row 3- Now you will see that 2 loops have formed on the side of your stitches, insert hook through BOTH of those loops and pull up yarn,
yo, and pull yarn through all loops on hook. Turn. (NO ch 1)
Row 4- Rep row 3.
Rows 5 to 32- Rep row 3. Fasten off, leaving long tail to sew with.
Note 1- Notice that little loops form at the edge of your rope as you crochet, you will be using those little loops to sew up your frog closure.
Forming the Snail-
Thread blunt needle with leftover tail. Turn the end of the cord into a circle, and using the loops on the edges, stitch your circle, continue to
turn the rope around itself and to sew, until you have only 3 inches of rope left. (Use a measuring tape to make sure.) Fasten off and secure yarn
at back of the circle formed. (this is the snail's shell.) You can now snip the leftover yarn or leave to use it to attach your frog closure to the scarfie, that is what I will do.
Now, Turn the leftover rope around towards the "shell" you just formed. This is the rest of the snail and also the buttonhole loop of your frog closure. Using the tail you left at the beginning
of your rope, sew the buttonhole loop to the "shell", secure at back of rope. Now, take a good look at your snail. If the "shell" is too much to the side, simply, turn the circle a bit, towards the top of the buttonhole loop and secure in place by sewing the side loops together. Secure at back. If you consider that the buttonhole loop is too large for the button you have selected, simply sew a couple of side loops together ont he inside of the buttonhole loop and then bring the yarn to the back of the rope. Fasten off. Secure at back.
How to sew to scarfie:
Match scarfie's ends. Pin Snail Frog in place and sew. Fasten off, secure well, so it will not come off with use! Sew matching button. Fasten off.
Note 2- I made mine in the opposite direction in which usually people make buttonholes. You can make your frog in the opposite direction to mine. Just start twisting your circle on the opposite side of the rope!
