Chickie's Puzzle
I'd like to know how it happened.
I can't understand it a bit;
A moment ago I was curled up so,
There was naught I could do but pick.

So I picked and picked, and by and by,
There came a great crashing sound;
And first thing I knew the shell was in two,
And I standing safe on the ground.

Anonymous author of the 1800s.
Moral of Chickie's Puzzle:
Persevere, if it is somethig worthwhile,
don't give up.

How to Make a Sweater Without a Pattern--Part 2

More than a pattern, I will give you a very useful formula that will enable you to make all kinds of sweaters and garments for yourself and for others.

You Will Need:
* Worsted weight yarn, colors of your choice, the sample used 6 solid colors and 1 matching variegated
* Size H crochet hook
* 1 pair of scissors
* 1 tapestry needle to join pieces
* 1 Measuring tape
* Brown paper
* Easy sewing pattern or personal garment

First, take a sweater you really love and which fits you well, or, if you are making it for someone else, take a garment from that person or purchase an easy sewing pattern for the standard fit of that person's size.
Cut out the pattern and transfer it to brown paper (trace it and cut it out), if you use a garment, trace the outlines of your garment and make a good skematic of it, with measurements and all, if possible. Next you will decide the size of your blocks, they could be small or large as in my example (this is a tunic I made as a birthday gift and the recepient loves it.)
Choose your yarn or thread and start making your squares, they could be grannies or textured
stitch blocks like the ones I made. Fill the space of your paper outline with the blocks, pinning them with pins in place, the outward side facing the paper. Then, join them together, the wrong side facing you, while they are still pinned to the paper. Once you have your garment in one piece, crochet the strips all along to fill the sides, the neckline and the back, the wrong side facing you.
With the sleeves you do the same, you make a paper outline of the sleeves that could fit you and your garment, fill that with blocks and crochet strips in between and if you want to, at the bottom as a loose "cuff."
If you want pockets, you make two squares, sew them together and just join them to the side strip at each side facing inward as you go about crocheting and joining them.
With this formula you can make a variety of sweaters.
If you want your tunic to have buttons, make buttonholes as you sc the front side strip. If you don't want to make buttonholes, make frogs and sew them to the front strip with nice knots or buttons on the strip opposite to it.
You can make many changes on this garment, you can make it shorter, to become a classic sweater, or longer, to turn it into a light spring coat.
Hope you can make a lot of beautiful sweaters using this formula!

Materials: Worsted weight yarn scraps in colors of choice.
I used a small ball of yellow and two shades of brown scraps.
2 small buttons in a matching color
Tapestry needle
Crochet hook size H

Front-
With nose color (I used medium brown):
Round 1- Ch 2, 8 sc in 2nd ch from hk, sl st to join rnd. Fasten off. Weave in tail. (8 sc)

Round 2- Join body color (I used a happy, bright yellow): Ch 2, 1 hdc in same spot as ch 2, 2 hdc in each sc all around. (16 hdc made.)

Round 5- Sl st till center of first corner. Ch 2, 2 hdc in corner, 1 hdc in next 3 hdc, 2 hdc in next st, [1 hdc in each of next 4 hdc, 3 hdc in corner,] rep 3 more times, 1 extra hdc in last st. Join rnd with sl st. (47 hdc)
Round 6- Sl st till you reach center of first corner. Ch 2, 2 hdc in same spot as ch 2, 1 hdc in each of next 12 hdc, *3 hdc in next hdc, 1 hdc in each of next 11 hdc, rep from * twice, 3 hdc in next corner, 1 hdc in each of next 2 hdc, 2 hdc in next hdc, 1 hdc in each of next 2 sts, 2 hdc in next st, 1 hdc in each of last 2 hdc. Sl st to join rnd. Fasten off.

Back- Rep rnds 1 to 6 but using only Bright Yellow.

Edging-

Row 1- With both Back and Front with Right Sides Facing outward, and using the same brown yarn you made the nose with, sc all around through both thicknesses, leaving top open to stuff it through. Ch 1, turn.

Row 2- 1 sc in each sc all the way to where you ended your Brown edging (it is not a real round because it only covers the bottom and sides.)

Ears-
With the same brown or color used for nose, Ch 2.

Rnd 1- 5 sc in 2nd ch from hook, sl st to join. (5 sc) Rnd 2- Ch 1, 1 sc in same space, 2 sc in each sc around. (10 sc)
Rnd 3- Ch 1, *1 sc in first sc, 2 sc in next sc, rep around from * to end, join with sl st. (15 sc)

Rnd 4- Ch 1, 1 sc all around. (15 sc) Fasten off. Leave a long tail to sew it with.

Eye patches- With lighter shade of brown, Ch 2, 5 sc in 2nd ch from hook. Add darker shade of brown and ch 1, make 11 sc around lighter brown circle. Fasten off leaving tail to sew it with.
Sew eye patches to Front above nose. If you want to, sew 1 button on top of each patch as an accent to the eyes . Gently stuff your pincushion. Sew top with original yellow yarn or sc across the top with the F hook. Sew ears to side corners. Sew a blossom or flower of your choice (use any pattern you like) to the top of the head.
Done!

Variation:
You can turn this flowerumi into a cute little wallet as follows: Make front patch, cut a piece of felt of a discreet color, like beige, a little bit smaller than the patch and sew it to the back. Repeat the same procedure with the back side. Of course, felt pieces must face inward. Follow the rest of the pattern until you come to the end. With the body color, make a small flap that will face the back of the little animal head, sew your blossom to the top of that flap, and make sure the ears are placed so that they lie on the sides of the head, and do not hinder the movement of the flap.
(the flap has to be somewhat narrower than the head). Cut a piece of felt and line that flap. Sew a piece of velcro to that felt lining. and another piece of velcro to where the flap will lie to close the little wallet. Clever and cute!
You could also increase the size and turn it into a cute purse for a little girl. The handle could be yellow and be sewn from side to side from the top of each ear.
You've got yourself one cute little purse!

Puffed Crocheted Cables FREE Stitches

Best Blog Tips
Puffed Cable

If you love crochet that is textured and crisp, almost 3D,
you will absolutely love this cable
I will only give you the strip, you will have to calculate it into a block or fit into the
pattern of your next purse, or top, which is not difficult, for example, if you are making a tote, it would look crisp and beautiful as a center motif and then you just add the width on the sides, I've done that type of thing too.
If it is front and center on summer top or shell, you calculate it on a paper pattern of a similar garment you already made.
Or better yet, if you are working on blocks or strips you just add it every now and then, and it will look gorgeous.
A few years back made a shell for my mom (for Mother's day) using blocks that were 29 stitches wide and I just kept going up
without ending the block until I had a series of strips. I measured the width of one of her tops and matched it, leaving a square
neckline and then just made a shell edging all around the neck, armhones and bottom. The top was very pretty and she loves it
to this day. It is comfortable and she wears it every chance she gets.
You can do something like that with this strip.

Puff Stitch: Yarn over, insert the hook into the stitch you are making, yo, pull long loop to the height of all the stitches int he row, (if hdc do it to the height of the hdc)
through stitch, (yo, insert hook in the same st, yo, pull long lp through st) 3 times, yo, pull through all loops on hook, ch 1.

I'm giving you the pattern in two versions.
1st. hdc and puff stitch, for those that like to work fast. The result is "airy," I worked with worsted weight yarn and an H hook.
I also made the same pattern with worsted weight yarn and an H hook, using sc instead of hdc and a smaller modified puff stitch,
for those who would want it to be tighter stitch.
If you will be using cotton thread, adjust it to a worsted weight thread, such as Sugar and Cream (especially if you are inserting the cable into a purse pattern)
or just work with No 3 or No 5 thread plus a No10 thread held together throughout and reduce the size of the hook to a G. The strip will be narrower and
you will have to add more side stitches to make up your pattern but that should be no problem if you are working in strips. Get yourself one of those wonderful
70's style patterns for tote bags or granny square tops and think "strips" instead of blocks and you'll be buzing along in no time! Of ocurse, you can use it as an
all-over pattern andit would be simply gorgeous, but if you want it as an acent on a project that needs "something," it woule be easy to insert as a strip in a prominent
spot.
Enjoy it!

Here's the pattern:

Puffed Cable in two versions

Hdc Puffed Cable

Row 1--Ch 10, 1 hdc in 3rd ch from hk and in each ch across. Ch 2 (counts as 1st hdc throughout), turn.
Row 2--1 hdc in next 3 sts, 1 puff st in next st, 1 hdc in each of last 4 sts. Ch 2, turn.
Row 3--1 hdc in next 2 hdc, 1 puff st in each of next 3 sts, 1 hdc in last 3 sts. Ch 2, turn.
Row 4--1 hdc, 1 puff st, 1 hdc in top of next puff st , 1 hdc in top of next puff st, 1 puff st in top of next puff st, 1 hdc in each of last 2 hdc. Ch 2, turn.
Rows 5 to 6--Rep Row 4. Ch 2, (counts as 1 hdc), turn. Ch 2, turn.
Row 7-- 1hdc in nextst, 1 puff st in each of next 2 sts, 1 hdc in each of last 2 sts.
Rep from rows 2 to 6, for puffed "cable" shape.

Sc Puffed Cable
This is the smaller version with a more "closed" weave in its stitching:

Row 1--Ch 10, 1 sc in 3rd ch from hook and in each ch across. Ch 1, turn.
Row 2--1 sc in each of next 2 sc, 1 puff st in next st, 1 sc in each of last 4 sts. Ch 1, turn (counts as first sc of row throughout).

Row 3--1 sc in next sc, 1 puff st in each of next 3 sts, 1 sc in last 3 sts. Ch 1, turn.
Row 4--1 sc, 1 puff st in next st, 1 sc in top of puff st from previous row, 1 sc in each of last 2 sc. Ch 1, turn.
Rows 5 to 6--Rep Row 4. Ch 1, turn.
Row 7--Rep row 3.

Rep from Rows 2 to Row 17 to beable to create a repeating puffed "cable" shape.
These strips are very useful and can be inserted in free-form projects, granny square projects, etc.
Revised and corrected. Thank you for your support and encouragement!

Tips, Tricks and Problem Solvers. . .

Best Blog Tips
As the title of my entry says, I would like to share some tips, tricks and problem solving advice.

From Boring to Beautiful-

Let's say you have crocheted a doily, but after all your trouble it did not come out the way you wanted it. You wanted something a bit fancier and more elegant. Here are some suggestions you can follow to add some pizzazz to it:

1. Depending on the design of your doily, you may add some embroidery to it. 2. You may add some ribbon to it. 3. You may add some pearls or beads to it. Crocheted beading is easier by far than embroidery beading. At least I find the latter one more difficult. But if you have come to the end of a project and would like to apply beads to it, by all means, get yourself a good quality sewing (I prefer polyester quilting quality thread) of the same color as your project, purchase the beads that would go best with it and just carefully sew them on, taking care that the stitches will not show.

Holes in Hats- That has happened to the best of us! You are making a nice winter hat and when you sew it all up it has a gaping hole at the top! Well, I am here suggesting some creative ways to cover that hole. 1. Make a pompon and place it on top of the hole. 2. Make a flower and sew it in such a way as to cover the hole. 3. Make a butterfly and use as the flower above. 4. Make a huge tassel and use it to cover the hole. 5. Make a bow with grossgrain ribbon and attach it to the top.

All Those

Yarn Ends!- Let's say that you like to crochet or knit in color combinations, and are making winter hats again. You hate the job of having to deal with all those yarn ends at the end of your project. Well, this is an easy way to deal with that, pull them all out with a crochet hook, a the top of the hat after you have closed it, and braid them! You can also turn them into tassels.

Do you feel discouraged or down sometimes?

Do you think that life is being hard on you? Well, stop and look arount you! "In nature itself are mesages of hope and comfort. There are flowers upon the thistles, and the thorn are coverd with roses." Steps to Christ, page 10. Would you like to read this book for free? Fun Tassels to Decorate your Projects

Best Blog Tips
I learned to make tassels as a child when, at school, I learned to make tassel dolls. They were fun and easy to make so I have always liked tassels. They can be very complex though, and I am learning how to make those, but for now, I will share here a couple of the simplest tassels. If you are going to use them for a project, color coordinate them with that pillow, afghan or purse handle you are going to hang them from. There are many kinds of tassels, some can be used to decorate the zipper of a toiletries bag, others can be put in the corners of a crocheted, knit or embroidred pillow, or on the corners of an afghan or poncho. Some are so decorative that they can be used on curtain pulls, on ceiling fan pulls, and on the handles of purses. I want to share with you some fun tassels that you can make. For simplicity's sake and because we are in winter, we will be using yarn. So these are the materials you will be needing: Worsted weight yarn of at least 3 different colors which coordinate with a project you want your tassel to embellish. A pair of scissors. A piece or cardboard about 4 inches wide.

Two-Toned Tassel-

You can make this tassel in a combination of yarns, or threads, you can even start it with thin ribbon, ricrac or thin lace and then continue it with yarn and make it as fancy as you want to, depending on the use you will be making of it. For example, if you are going to use it to decorate something in your home like a curtain tieback, or to put it on the corners of a table runner, or on the edges of a stole, you select the materials according to the use you will be making of it.

1. Choose the color you want for the longest part of your tassel and begin with that one. Hold the yarn firmly around the piece of cardboard you have cut to the specific width you need and start winding the yarn around it over and over, but not too tightly, until you have wound it around 26 times.

2. With a contrasting color, and taking care to stay on top of the previous color of yarn, wind the yarn 20 times.

3. With your third contrasting yarn, cut a length twice as long as the suspension cord you want for your tassel (the cord from which it will hang), fold in half, make a knot on one end and twist with your two hands going in opposite directions, one end of the cord going forward and the other end going backwards, until the the cord is twisted. Tie another knot at the other end. Slip your cord under the yarn still in the looping cardboard, making sure you get your cord underneath ALL of the yarn. Tie your cord as tightly as possible. Make a knot.

4.Wind the same contrasting yarn that you used for the cord around the tassel 15 times. Make a knot. Then, taking a crochet hook, pull the ends of the yarn inward so that they will not be seen. You now have a simple but very nice two-toned soft tassel. you could leave it like that, but let's go one step further. . .

Tied-Tassel-

Divide the contrasting yarn already on the tassel in 4 eaqual sections as if it was hair. Take some small portions of the contrasting ayrn with which you tied the tassel and tie these small sections, making small knots at the back of each. You can leave the hanging cords at the sides or snip them according to your liking.

Tufted Tassel-

To make this tassel, follow the steps to the two-toned tassel above, then just measure about 1 1/2 inches and snip the contrasting yarn off and you have your tufted tassel! If you use two contrasting yarns, like for example, a chenille yarn and a nice softer yarn for the tuft, you can get very nice effects. Hope you like this short tutorial. You can make a lot of different tassels. Use these for bookmarks, put them at the end of the zipper of your toiletries bag, tie one to the knob of a set of drawers, you name it!

There is nothing as comforting as the love of God! May I suggest that you take some time to read Steps to Christ, a small but wonderful book!Has led millions to Christ and has kept millions close to Himin their Christian walk. You can read it here!
