Sarah's Edging

Best Blog Tips

This beautiful edging is for a sewn fleece shawl made for a friend, it is to be sewn to the already made shawl for our friend Sarah. It can be used as a trim for a crocheted shawl, wrap, or even a throw or an afghan. It quite lovely and very easy to make, it could easily substitute for tassels in just about anything.

Materials:

Red Heart worsted weight yarn Royal (I only needed 1 skein)
Crochet hook size H
Scissors
Blunt needle to weave in ends

Base of Edging-

With a worsted weight yarn with a color of your choice (I used Red Heart Royal), and H crochet hook,
Ch 15.
Row 1- 1 dc in 5th ch from hook, *ch 1, skip 1 ch, 1 dc in next ch, rep from * across. Ch 4, turn.
Row 2- 1 dc in next dc, ch 1, *1 dc in next dc, ch 1, rep from * across. Ch 4, turn.
Rep row 2 until you reach the length you want for your edging.

Sewing Straight Edge of Edging-

(You will now be working across the length of dc mesh stitches you just made. This is the edge you will be sewing to your project):

Row 1- Work 112 sc across the edge of dc mesh. Fasten off. Weave in tail.

Decorative Edge of Edging-

With Right Side facing, join yarn to opposide wide side of edging.
Row 1- Row 1- Work 112 sc across the edge of dc mesh. Ch 4, turn.
Row 2- Skip 2 sc, 1 sc in next sc, *ch 9, 1 dc in 4th ch from hook, ch 1, skip 1 ch, 1 dc in next ch, ch 1, skip 1 ch, 1 dc in each of last 2 ch.
Skip 2 sc (of mesh band) 1 sc in next sc, ch 4, skip 2 sc, 1 sc in next sc, rep from * across. Finish row as follows, ch 9, 1 dc in 4th ch from hook, ch 1, skip 1 ch, 1 dc in next ch, ch 1, skip 1 ch, 1 dc in each of last 2 ch, skip 3 sc, 1 sc in last sc of row. Ch 6, turn.
Row 3- 2 sc in top of that last dc-motif made in previous row, ch 3, 4 tr in ch-4 loop of previous row, *2 sc in top of next dc-motif, ch 3, 4 tr in ch-4 loop, rep from * across. End row, ch 3, slip st in last st. Fasten off, weave in tails.

Note- If you decide to use it for something on a thinner weight of yarn, please swatch so that you will get the right results. The good thing about vertical edgings is that you can adjust them better than those you have to work horizontally only to find out after all your hard work that you have something that is either too long or too short for your project!

Poetic Edging

Best Blog Tips

I like edgings that work themselves up vertically not horizontally. Don't you think it is awful to do all of those chains and stitches just to find out when you are done, that your edging is either too long or too short? Well, it has happened to me, and that is the reson why I prefer vertical edgings. Here's one I came up with today and I would like to share it with you all. It is very easy and would look beautiful in just about anything. Although I used yarn, you can use #10 crochet thread if your edging will be used for a top or any other delicate-looking piece.

Craftybegonia's Shell Rick Rack

Best Blog Tips

If there is anything that lends itself for creativity is children's clothing. My mom has been making little girls' dresses for charity and I promised to lend a hand when it came to "decorating" them. So I have. This is one of our creations. I added the edging and chose the teddy bear buttons from my stash and sew them on. I think the dress is darling and it will make very happy an otherwise sad little girl. That in itself is a source of joy to us.
I'm sharing the pattern of this rick rack with you. You might find it useful for a myriad little things: pillowcases, hand towells, hankies, curtains, but especially, little girls' tops, skirts and dresses. It is very easy and it works up really fast. Here it is:

Materials:
Crochet #10 cotton in color of your choice, I used Victory Red
#1 silver hook
Note: This rick rack works upwards not lengthwise. I find that more practical when you have to make a length of trim, if you have to go further, you don't have to undo your work, it you made to much you can always adjust.
Ch 5, on 5th ch from hk, make 1 dc, ch 1, 1 dc, ch 1, 1 dc, ch 1, turn. Wind thread around hook, insert hook in the middle of the shell already made (2 dc on either side), make 1 dc, ch 1, 1 dc, ch 1, 1 dc, ch 1, 1 dc, ch 1. Repeat for as long as you need to for the edging's length.
