How to Crochet with Knitting Needles Tutorial--- 2

Best Blog Tips

Last week we started a series of lessons which I hope iwll open to you a whole new source of wonderful stitches whihc you canuse for scarves, granny squares, sweater blocks, and much, much more! We started learning how to use knitting needles with a hook, to create stitches!

This week we will learn the Knit Stitch, which will come very much in handy later on in our lesson series.

For the sake of brevity, we will only cast on 20 stitches like we did last week, but if you are making a block and would like to match it with other block which you have already made, simply crochet enough stitches to match the width of your already existing blocks and knit up until you match their size. You can also continue up all the way to make a scarf, or triple the amount of stitches to make yourself a small pillow for your bed or for your couch. We are only practicing, but as you learn, don't be afraid to apply what you have learned to actual projects you would like to make.
Note- Remember that the width of your block or strip will be the same as the amount of chains you make for your starting cast on.

(Photos show the front and then the back of the knit stitch fabric.)

Materials:
Worsted weight yarn of your choice
1 set knitting needles size 5
1 crochet hook size F

Let's begin.
Ch 20. Using a crochet hook size F, insert last loop left on crochet hook into knitting needle after you finish your chain, then *insert hook into next ch and pull up a loop of yarn, insert that loop into first knitting needle, pull gently on yarn to adjust loop, rep from *with all chains made until you have 1 loop hanging on the knitting needle per chain made. (20 loops on needle)

Knit Stitch-
To start the knit stitch, which is one of the two basic stitches in knitting, you will follow some of the steps we learned last week, the only difference is that last week, for the Garter Stitch, we did knit stitch in the front and in the back, this time, we need to do the knit stitch in the front and the purl stitch in the back. This is how you do it:
Row 1- (Right Side) With working yarn to the back, insert hook from front to back into first loop on knitting needle, pull up loop, insert into second knitting needle. Rep across, adjusting tension of loop as you insert it into the knitting needle. (You just made a "knit" row)
Purl Stitch-
Row 2-
(Wrong Side) Placing working yarn in front, insert the crochet hook from back to front and with hook facing downward, pull up a loop and insert that loop in second knitting needle.
Rep across. (You just completed a Purl row.)
Rep rows 1 and 2 for pattern. This will form the Stockinette Pattern.
Practice these two rows until you get them down pat. Remember, I've got something planned and I don't want you to miss out on it, so learn them well!

If you require more information than this, please refer to last week's illustrated tutorial.

Sarah's Edging

Best Blog Tips

This beautiful edging is for a sewn fleece shawl made for a friend, it is to be sewn to the already made shawl for our friend Sarah. It can be used as a trim for a crocheted shawl, wrap, or even a throw or an afghan. It quite lovely and very easy to make, it could easily substitute for tassels in just about anything.

Materials:

Red Heart worsted weight yarn Royal (I only needed 1 skein)
Crochet hook size H
Scissors
Blunt needle to weave in ends

Base of Edging-

With a worsted weight yarn with a color of your choice (I used Red Heart Royal), and H crochet hook,
Ch 15.
Row 1- 1 dc in 5th ch from hook, *ch 1, skip 1 ch, 1 dc in next ch, rep from * across. Ch 4, turn.
Row 2- 1 dc in next dc, ch 1, *1 dc in next dc, ch 1, rep from * across. Ch 4, turn.
Rep row 2 until you reach the length you want for your edging.

Sewing Straight Edge of Edging-

(You will now be working across the length of dc mesh stitches you just made. This is the edge you will be sewing to your project):

Row 1- Work 112 sc across the edge of dc mesh. Fasten off. Weave in tail.

Decorative Edge of Edging-

With Right Side facing, join yarn to opposide wide side of edging.
Row 1- Row 1- Work 112 sc across the edge of dc mesh. Ch 4, turn.
Row 2- Skip 2 sc, 1 sc in next sc, *ch 9, 1 dc in 4th ch from hook, ch 1, skip 1 ch, 1 dc in next ch, ch 1, skip 1 ch, 1 dc in each of last 2 ch.
Skip 2 sc (of mesh band) 1 sc in next sc, ch 4, skip 2 sc, 1 sc in next sc, rep from * across. Finish row as follows, ch 9, 1 dc in 4th ch from hook, ch 1, skip 1 ch, 1 dc in next ch, ch 1, skip 1 ch, 1 dc in each of last 2 ch, skip 3 sc, 1 sc in last sc of row. Ch 6, turn.
Row 3- 2 sc in top of that last dc-motif made in previous row, ch 3, 4 tr in ch-4 loop of previous row, *2 sc in top of next dc-motif, ch 3, 4 tr in ch-4 loop, rep from * across. End row, ch 3, slip st in last st. Fasten off, weave in tails.

Note- If you decide to use it for something on a thinner weight of yarn, please swatch so that you will get the right results. The good thing about vertical edgings is that you can adjust them better than those you have to work horizontally only to find out after all your hard work that you have something that is either too long or too short for your project!

"God's mercy and love for the fallen race have not ceased to accumulate, nor lost their earthward direction.
It is true that disappointments will come; tribulation we must expect; but we are to commit everything, great and small, to God. He does not become perplexed by the multiplicity of our grievances, nor overpowered by the weight of our burdens. His watchare extends to every household, and encircles every individual; He is concerned in all our business and our sorrows. He marks every tear; He is touched with the feeling of our infirmities. All the afflictions and trials that befall us here are permitted, to work out His purposes of love toward us—'that we might be partakers of His holiness,' and thus become participants in that fullness of joy which is found in His presence." Pull Tab Crochet

Best Blog Tips

Recycling is always good, making something useful and sometimes, even beautiful out of an object that would have been thrown away otherwise. . .It is wonderful when you can combine creativity with recicling.
Pull Tab Crochet is one of those unique combinations.
Yes, I'm talking about the pull tabs in soda cans and other cans. You can crochet with them and create a large variety of items, such as doilies, placemats, belts , dog collars and leashes, coasters, tote bags and even clothing!
If you have never heard of Pull Tab Crochet, let me give you a basic start.
I will give you one of the simplest of patterns and try to illustrate it step by step.
Once you get the idea, your creativity and the amount of pull tabs you can get your hands on are your only limitation!
This is my own pattern for a simple flower coaster
Materials: Scraps of crochet thread #10 crochet thread, at least 6 soda can pull tabs, crochet hook size 1.

Instructions:
With scrap size 10 cotton thread of your choice and hook No.1, Ch 6, slip st to form ring. Ch2, then inside ring make 23 hdc. Ch2. Turn.1 Hdc in same space as ch2, 2 hdc in each space all around until you reach the last 6 sts, make1 hd in each. Fasten off.

Take 1 of the pull tabs and with two threads held together, begin to sc on the side of the upper portion of the lower ring of the tab. Continuing straight up, edging the upper ring of the tab. Go all around until you meet the beginning level on the other side of the tab. Fasten off.

Repeat with all pull tabs.

You can test to see how your flower will look.

Now take the centre you had made and with the front facing, lay a crocheted pull tab on top, aligning with the upper edge, sc through the back loop of the pull tab and both loops of the centre round with two threads held togehter, 3 times (3 sc). Slip st on next 3 st, then attach the next crocheted pull tab as before, rep. across. You can leave it as is and fasten off or you can do a row of shells all around on the lower portion of the rings.
As you can see, you join them with the silver portion around the centre of the flower or facing outward or viceversa.
This flower could be used for anything, a coaster, a fridgie. . .You can do many variations of this simple pattern. Now, what I have given you could very well be the start of something. If you continue crocheting, you can make the front of a purse. How about a sturdy market bag or a tote to carry your crochet in? It is all up to your imagination!

Enjoy yourself!

"Once I thought to find on earth
Love, perfect and complete.
Now I know it carries wounds
In its hands and feet."
